Tiger Woods revealed Thursday that his mother had survived a narrow escape when the terrorist bombs went off in London last week.
Playing in the British Open at St Andrews , Woods joined other golfers in the middle of their rounds, as well as officials and thousands of fans at the Old Course in observing a two-minute silence at midday to honor the victims.
Asked after returning a tournament-leading 66 first round score what had been going through his mind during the gesture Woods replied: "I was more thankful than anything else."
"My mom was in the building right across the street from where the bomb blew up, I was very thankful that my mom is still here.
"It very easily could have been pretty tragic for me personally. I can only imagine what everyone else who was involved, what they might have been going through."
Woods explained that his mother who is Thai had been vacationing in London at the time of the blasts and had been staying at a hotel which was located across the street from one of the blasts.
But he only found out about the fact on
Wednesday putting it down to his family's reluctance to talk about their personal problems.
"My family doesn't do that," he said. "When my dad had cancer, he didn't say anything. When I had my knee surgery, I didn't say anything. We just do that. It's one of our deals of probably being a Woods , I guess. Kind of deal with things and move on." |
